Coach - This brand makes me feel nostalgic because of how it reminds me of my mom. This is because my mom buys from this brand often, and has been buying from them for a long time. I do not buy from this company, mainly because I do not need purses and their bags are expensive. However, my mom shops there quite enthusiastically. The way the company branded their products made me feel this way because they provided a regal yet not over-the-top feeling. From the design of their products to the materials they use, they have created a comforting image for me.

Why/how can logos be used to communicate?

Logos can be used to communicate by presenting an idea through a graphic representation of a company name, trademark, etc. They are used to communicate because visual messages are often more effective in sending a message.

Via the internet, find 2 favorite logos that clearly communicate their brand.

Post both in this entry and explain your choice.

AdBlock's logo clearly communicates their brand in that it represents its purpose. AdBlock prevents unwanted advertisements from showing up on webpages. The stopping hand is a universal symbol that many people can understand, as this application "stops" the ads from appearing. The color red is also often used as a representation of danger, or again, stopping. The octagonal shape and color make the logo look like a stop sign, further emphasizing the "stop" aspect of the application.

The Coco-Cola logo is a timeless logo that no one will truly forget. It is a very popular brand that is known virtually worldwide. It's font choice and crimson color give off a sense of something grand, something classic. Not only that, but the logo includes a soda bottle, saying straight away that the company sells soda. These aspects help the company clearly communicate their brand effectively.

What is the difference between copyright and public domain?

Copyright refers to original works that are protected under the creator. Public domain refers to works not protected by copyright that can be used freely.

How can you avoid plagiarism in this class?  In other classes?

You can avoid plagiarism in this class by making sure your works are original and are not copies of existing designs. In other classes, you can avoid plagiarism by ensuring that your written words are your own and not someone else's. You can do so by checking through the internet and seeing if anyone has used the same words and phrasing you have.

In this post, answer the following questions:

What is OSHA? What do the letters stand for?

OSHA stands for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It is an agency of the United States Department of Labor, which is to assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.

How can graphic designers effectively communicate? In your own words, explain the communication process.

Signs should be clearly legible, and easy to see and understand for workers from a distance.

Understanding the history, culture and movements of fine and graphic arts will make you a better producer of visual messages. Why?

By understanding past trends, you can use what you know what to use in your design that will appeal to the audience. Not only that, but you can prevent from repeating past mistakes.

These lines suggest confusion and turbulence? Why do you think?

Describe the difference between geometric shapes and organic shapes?
What are abstract shapes?

Which basic shape projects an attitude of honesty or equality?
What do triangles suggest?
Circles convey feelings of what?
Describe positive space and negative space? What is texture? Incorporating texture into a design can help do what? What is value?
What is another name for value? What can the element of color do when incorporated into a  design?

ANSWERS:
1. To create good graphic design, it requires an understanding of graphic design. It must convey information well and look pleasing to the eye.
2. The difference between elements and principles are that elements are the components, or parts, which can be isolated in any visual design. They are the actual things we add to a design. Meanwhile, principles tell us how we should organize those elements on a page or screen.
3. The six elements of design are line, shape or form, space, texture, value, and color.
4. When alone or combined with other lines or shapes, lines can aid in readability, appearance and message of a design.
5. Horizontal lines can suggest a feeling of rest in relation to gravity.
6. Vertical lines communicate a feeling of loftiness because extended lines suggest an overpowering grandeur.
7. Diagonal lines suggest a feeling of movement because because they are unstable in relation to gravity.
8. Soft, shallow curved lines suggest comfort, safety, and relaxation. This is because they are smooth and continuous with no bumps or sharp turns.
9. Deep, acute curves suggest confusion and turbulence because they are similar the violence of waves in a storm.
10. Shapes or forms are elements that define a specific area of space. The difference between two dimensional shapes and three dimensional shapes is that a two dimensional shape has width and height, while a three dimensional shape gas depth, as well as width and height.
11. The difference between geometric shapes and organic shapes is that geometric shapes are structured, usually symmetrical shapes. Organic shapes are found in nature or can be man-made shapes. They are often irregular and fluid.
12. Abstract shapes are stylized or simplified versions of natural shapes.
13. A square projects an attitude of honesty or equality.
14.  Triangles suggest action. They can also suggest stability if it is pyramid shaped.
15. Circles convey feelings of protection or infinity.
16. Positive space refers to the objects and elements used in a design. Positive space is the area which contains all of the elements that is added to a design. They may include text, graphics, photos, lines, or shapes. Negative space refers to the shapes around and between those objects and elements. Negative space, or white space, gives the eye a place to rest, which is needed in order for the message you're trying to communicate to be absorbed. It is a visual cue that there is a break in the content or that the content is finished. Texture can refer to the actual surface of a design with the reader actually being able to feel the texture of the paper and materials in the printed design. It can also be implied through the use of rich, layered graphics designed to give the illusion of texture in a two dimensional design. Value is the degree of light and dark in a design. It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between. It gives objects depth and perception.
17. Another name for value is tone. The element of color can convey moods, create images, attract attention, and identify objects when incorporated into a design.

Vision Statement:

In the future, I hope that I can find a successful career in engineering, perhaps civil engineering. I hope that I can graduate college with a degree that I am proud of and that my family is proud of as well. Perhaps twenty years from now, I will be a part of a loving family with a stable income and a warm, welcoming home. Maybe if I have time in the future, I can also travel more with loved ones and friends; I would like to see more of the world and further than just the small town of Temple City.

Mission Statement:

In order to achieve my goals, I have to take several carefully planned steps. To accomplish my goals, I must first graduate high school with a good GPA so that I can be accepted into schools that will assist me in my education. I will also have to prepare for large exams such as the SAT in order to increase my chances in getting into a better college. Once I am hopefully into college, I will have to study hard in order to achieve a degree in the the field that I am interested in-- engineering. Once that has been finished, I must be able to find a stable job that will accept me and my skills. If I have a substantial income going, I suppose that will be the time that I can begin looking beyond the boundaries in regards to the joys of life. Work and its priorities must always come first. Maybe once I have completed that, then I can discover more of the world and its wonders with friends and family. Perhaps I will find a happy and healthy relationship with someone, and from that point be able to start a family that I will love. Of course, it seems as though I am planning out my entire life in a few words, but everyone must start somewhere, and perhaps now is the best time for me.
