Sketchbook #1: Elements of Design

Line - This design works because there is a diagonal line, which represents movement. Not only that, most of the elements of this picture are heading in the same direction of the lines, further symbolizing active movement. It works well with this advertisement because it is promoting exercise equipment, which involves movement.

Value - This design worked because the contrast between light and dark gave off a large sense of perception. The light and dark accentuate the highlights and shadows more strongly. As well as contrast, the shapes and how they are colored and placed behind the women complement each well, almost giving a 3D look.

Shape - This design worked because it really focused on the shape of the watches. Their square shapes represent equality and balance. Their representation here gives off a sense of refinery and elegance, which is what I suppose the advertisement was going for.

Space - This design worked well here because of the space. There is a lot of negative space compared to positive space. This tells the reader that the main focus of the design is the watch, The black (negative space) tells you what is given attention and what is not, while also giving a sense of elegance using minimalism.

Color - The design here worked well because the colors stood out. The bright and neon colors of the advertisement instantly caught my attention. Not only that, but the color were complementary, and looked nice together. Its clean design and choice of colors were pleasing to the eye. The designers of this advertisement did a very good job.

Texture - The design here worked well because the texture of her dress stood out to me. This was an advertisement for nail polish, so one would assume of nail polish to be smooth. However, there are many rough elements to this picture, as such as the ruffles in the dress, her hair, and the flower in her hair. These "un-smooth" components contrast the slick and shiny nail polish, but because of how they are put together, they complement each other well.

Bad Design - I would consider this a bad design for several reasons. First, the arrangement of lines and how they are drawn throw me off. There are too many elements to focus on and seem cluttered. There are squiggly lines that I do not find pleasing. There is no big center focus and so I have trouble figuring out the message of this advertisement. The shape of the people throw me off as well, as they do not look pleasing to me.

Sketchbook #2: Symbols and Icons

Symbol #1 - Chemical Engineering
This symbol represents my interest in types of engineering such as chemical engineering. It shows that that is on my mind, hence the flask in the person's brain. My father is also a chemical engineer, so that inspires me as well.

Symbol #2 - Biomedical Engineering
I chose this symbol because when people think of engineering, they usually think of machinery and tools, like wrenches. However, biomedical engineering pertains to the medicinal aspect oif it, and that is what the red cross represents.

Icon - Water Company App. Icon
This could be an app icon for a water company. The reason I chose this was because civil engineering pertains to operating the facilities in communities, for example, the water system.

Sketchbook #3: Company Vision and Mission Statement/Logo Design

Vision - Our vision is that we will be able to facilitate people and other with innovative technology that will come from the extensive research in chemical engineering. With chemical engineering, we will put effort into the study of 3D printing and various polymers and plastics. Our research will not only help those in the 3D printing field, but also those involved with designers and inventors, so that they can trust to use our products in their own.
Mission - Our mission is to help the medical community with the use of 3D prosthetic limbs. Using plastics and polymers created through the study of chemical engineering, sturdy and manageable prosthetic limbs can be distributed to the public. Our mission includes not just people, but animals as well.
